This is a copy-n-paste from the calendar, but there will be more info on this thread (characters, game mechanics, etc.)

Title: Merry Winter's Eve
System: Neverdale
Genre: fantasy (non-boffer)
Period/theme/mood(costume/set/etc.): medieval fantasy (Ren Faire/SCA/fantasy costumes)
Basic rundown: It's winter time and a time of many indoor festivals and feasts. Now is the time for the holiday of Winter's Eve, a night of merriment, laughter, games and gossip (you can just never keep that out of courtly affairs). This year there's a buzz in the ear of all the noble folk and those wanting to become noble. Not only is the aged Grand Advisor talking of retiring and seeking a new Grand Advisor to take their place, but the Emperor of Somasia is accepting suitors for his lovely daughter. Much power, wealth and prestige to be had for the right persons. Will you be that person? Will you back that person? Will you do your best to foil that person?

The system is strongly influenced by White Wolf's Second Edition Mind's Eye Theater, but has many changes and differences.
This will be a fantasy game (i.e. faeries, elves, knights, wizards, magic, monsters, etc.), so be thinking about garb, props and such.
Keep checking back for more info. This game may use several characters from the Council of Chaos scenario that was played at Gamestorm 10, but in a lighter setting (so, if you played that scenario and had a favorite character that you'd like to play again, RSVP and drop me a PM). There's even one oxkin this year.
***Note: since there will be people RSVPing for the extra parts, don't worry about how many people you might see in the RSVP section. If there's more than 13, that doesn't necessarily mean the main characters are all taken. Please PM the GM if you have a particular character in mind (main or extra). Thank you!

The first part of your introduction to the world of Neverdale is the races, character classes and the lands they inhabit.

The races that will matter for this game:

Stout (dwarves, basically. Strong, sturdy, dedicated, hard-working, serious, no-nonsense)
Human (humans… yeah, that’s it. Proud, better-than-everyone-else)
U'shitha (oo-SHEE-thuh) (High Elves, majestic, proud, magical)
Changeling (half-faeries, wild, enchanting, brash and unpredictable)
J'par (juh-PAHR) (ogres, kind of… like a cross between an ogre or troll and a Klingon)
Toadling (odd, squat, weak, sneaky, toadlike little creatures)
N'henoth (nuh-HEE-noth) (half demons, not of this world and not of the other world, lost ones)
Catkin (cat people, elegant, stylish, graceful and cunning)
Orpheon (OR-fee-un) (Grey elves, more ethereal, mystical than even other elves)
Krog (rhymes with frog) (orcs, basically. Sturdy warriors, violent, rude, violent… did I mention violent?)
Elfkin (half elves, not human, not elf, not truly welcomed anywhere)
Wolfen (wolf people, warlike, savage, but sometimes smooth and crafty)
Oxkin (bull people, hearty warriors, strong, relentless, good at war strategy)

The character classes that will matter for this game:

Warrior- a master of warfare and single combat, familiar with weapons and armor of all types.
Protector- a master of the defensive combat arts, able to fend off attacks with perfection
Rogue- sly and cunning, able to get what others hold, no matter the barriers
Courtier- social master, able to sway conversation and any personal interaction in whatever way they wish
Seducer- a master of one-on-one interaction of the more intimate, romantic nature
Bookmage- a powerful user of magic, getting all they know from their vast collection of tomes
Selfmage- a powerful user of magic, pulling the power from their own bodies to fuel the spells they cast
Pactmage- a powerful user of magic, getting the power to cast their spells from a greater power
Diviner- a powerful user of magic, seeing things by touching objects and knowing their past (and maybe future?)

About the nations, etc.:

Fanoria (fan-O-ree-uh): a land of all the fantasy barbarian clichés, with evil wizards and great deserts and holy places and evil cults and heroes come from common folk, etc.
Carosa (suh-ROSE-uh): a mix of ancient the styles of Egypt, India, Persia, etc.
Norgon (NOR-gun): the Norselands, Highlands, etc.
Ironhelm (and the Underearth): the sturdy, mountainous nation of the Stouts (dwarves).
Somasia (soe-MAY-zhuh): huge Greek-like mega nation. The most powerful nation in the world, more trade, more soldiers, more money than any other.
Menat (mehn-AT): small island nation that is situated in such a way as to be the only safe place to port between long shipping routes.
The Enchanted Realm: the land of the faeries, the less dark, less evil ones (note that I don't say light and good, just less dark and less evil).
The Hidden Realm: the land of the darker, more evil faeries.

The seas are almost all impassable for one reason or another (shifting, jagged icebergs, swirling whirlpools, etc.

For a look at the map of Ye Known World for Neverdale, go to the photo section my album "Props, sets, etc."

***Part 2 will be an overview of the game mechanics***

The quick overview of game mechanics:

For the most part, you won’t have to worry about the mechanics, as most of this session is social interaction and political wheeling-dealing. When it comes down to it, the conflict resolution is fairly easy.

When a Challenge is initiated by someone, that person and their opponent (or the GM) enter into a quick game of rock-paper-scissors (either using the standard hand signs or tokens). If someone wins outright, they win. If there is a tie, then the two people compare applicable Attribute Traits and whoever has the most wins. Whoever lost this test loses the applicable Attribute Trait used. If you lost the test, you may demand a retest if you have an applicable Ability (red card with that Ability on it). You redo the test and have a chance of winning. You still lose the first Trait and the Ability card for the retest, but could wind up winning the Challenge. This may be repeated as many times as people have Abilities to retest with (but you never have to retest; you may accept your loss and move on). As soon as all this is done, whatever result was sought happens (the spell succeeds, the punch lands, the charming words win favor, etc.).

See? Not too difficult at all.

Your character will have at least one type of special cards (laminated parchment) with Spells, Racial Powers and Class Powers on them. The cards should explain how to use this spell or power and what tests and expenditures are needed (some require spending Will or Energy).

Will and Energy may be spent for other things (listed on the cards).

You may spend 1 Will to:
~Negate a Mental Spell aimed at you
~Negate a Social Spell aimed at you
~Get all Attributes back in one category (Physical, Social, Mental)

You may spend 1 Energy to:
~Get a Retest in a challenge that you do not have an applicable Ability for
~Heal one Health Point

***Note that any time you spend (or lose) an Attribute Trait, Ability, Will, Energy or Health Point, you must rip it up on the spot. Just tear it in half and toss it on the floor (the GM will take care of the mess, don’t worry).

***Also note that you need to let the GM know when you get healed or get Traits back, as he is the only one that can give these to you. As such, for this game I shall be OOC for the whole game, so that you have access to me whenever needed without interrupting the flow of conversations, etc.

***Part 3 will be a listing of characters available***

***This list may change, so keep checking back if you're interested***

Before the number is the preferred gender for smoothness of play, but the only ones that MUST be that gender are:

Aelinar, Deven, Bahgir, Lillandria, Finstasia, and Delanora.

(M)1. Gamblioni Nostradono, General of the Defensive Ranks for Lord Malphaet, Emperor of Somasia.
Human/Warrior. Loyal servant of the Emperor of Somasia. This one seems to be a major deciding factor in the outcome of the festival’s events. Practically representing Lord Malphaet himself, the General will undoubtedly have some say in who wins the hand of the Lord’s daughter. His position may carry some sway (by way of suggestion or threat) in who puts forward their best for the job of Grand Advisor.

(M)2. Deven Charlance, King of Northern Carosa.
Human/Courtier. Charming, smooth. A born leader and a master in the social field of battle. Northern Carosa is wealthy, but their military might is not so strong. The rivalry between Deven’s Northern Carosa and Bahgir’s Southern Carosa is well known. They seem to be at an unquiet peace.

(M)3. Julian Cristo, Governor of Menat.
N’henoth (half-demon)/Diviner. Smug, cunning, proud, but not arrogant in a way that breeds hate. The Governor knows the value of Menat and makes sure that everyone else knows, as well.

(M)4. Bahgir, King of Southern Carosa.
Catkin/Courtier. Another charmer, sleek, smooth. Soft of voice, calm of demeanor, but fierce when pressed. Bahgir is fond of the luxuries that power bring, relishing the fine silks and ornate jewelry that Southern Carosa is known for.

(M)5. Aelinar, Grand Advisor of Neverdale.
Orpheon/Bookmage. Wise, just, fair. Aelinar has been Grand Advisor for the last four Grande Councils and has helped manage peace and negotiate the maneuverings of commerce, politics and war in such a way that the best, most equitable decisions were made for the world. Soft-spoken, Aelinar seems to choose every word spoken very carefully. It is unknown why he has chosen to retire and choose a successor.

(F)6. Kelwen Ranlar, Bodyguard to Aelinar, Grand Advisor of Neverdale.
Oxkin/Protector. Fierce, proud, loyal. Professional and deadly, as are most oxkin and most Protectors. With Aelinar retiring and naming a successor, it seems somewhat odd that he would have a bodyguard here this evening.

(F)7. Dorian Petidale, Ambassador and Grand Solicitor of the Council of Merchants of Fanoria.
Elfkin/Selfmage. Kind, polite, friendly and professional. Dorian always seems to know how to stay on people’s good sides. Someone who enjoys comfort and joys of civilization, Dorian is a zealous supporter of commerce and of the Council of Merchants of Fanoria.

(M)8. Mel Mayflower, Ambassador of the Hidden Realm.
Changeling/Seducer. Sly, charming, direct. Mel has a way of getting too close without getting too close, of breaking down people’s barriers without them knowing it. Mel always seems quite direct about any goals or desires. This, alone, makes many people distrustful; no one trusts those who seem honest. Representing the Unseelie, or Dark, faeries, Mel has been able to establish a few minor trade agreements between them and the Cold World (as the fey refer to this world).

(M)9. Der’on L’tul, Honored Warrior Leader of the Kh’an-G’or J'par Clan.
J’par/Warrior. Rugged, warlike, meditative and well spoken. Powerful of personality and body, sometimes quiet and watchful, especially in social situations. Der’on seems to take in all that is being said in a room before leaping into the social fray.

(M)10. Aeryn Sundew, Ambassador of the Enchanted Realm.
Changeling/Rogue. Charming, somewhat brash, straightforward. The light to Mel’s shadow, Aeryn comes across as genuinely honest, not just bold and direct. Representing the Seelie, or Light, faeries, Aeryn has established many minor trade agreements between them and the Cold World (as the fey refer to this world).

(F)11. Lillandria Everhope, Archmage of Tower Sha-nor (in Fanoria).
N’henoth (half-demon)/Selfmage. The dark horse in the running for the new Grand Advisor position, Lilliana has been known to practice vindictive magics and is rumored to be a murderer. Nothing has been proven and it is not publicly known, but those in the know have ears and mouths everywhere.

(F)12. Lady Finstasia, rival Grand Advisor of Neverdale.
U’shitha/Pactmage. Not a leader of any power, but the official Rival to the Grand Advisor position. Not much is known of Lady Finstasia outside of the island city fortress of Neverdale. All that is known is that by Neverdale’s laws, Lady Finstasia has the right for extra consideration for the position of Grand Advisor. She may have quite an edge in this contest.

(F)13. Lady Delanora Malphaet, eldest daughter of Lord Valmont Malphaet, Emperor of Somasia.
Human/Courtier. She is here tonight to choose suitors for her hand. She may wind up finding none, one or several that she deems worthy. No doubt her father has set some criteria for who she must choose. Also no doubt that General Gamblioni Nostradono will be keeping an eye on her and on those who will seek to be potential suitors. This is the first time she has been seen outside Somasia since she reached the Age of Presentation.

Also, if you would like to play, but don't want to get really involved (it's your first time, you're just curious, but want to do more than watch, etc.), PM the GM about being an "extra". This is one of the games that could use people to play servants, guards, etc. (people important to the look and feel of the story, but not in-depth characters that you need to do a lot with). Sometimes a great way for the shy first-timer to get into the action without actually fully immersing themselves.

***part 4 will be more details about the scenario, setting and the world of Neverdale.

***Keep on eye on this one, as I will be adding edits directly to this post rather than making new posts

First, for those who will be looking into costume, etc., this is a festive, elegant, formal event (peasants need not apply). Even the servants, guards, etc., will be fairly well dressed (heck, even the oxkin will look somewhat dressed up). This is a fancy event where power and wealth will be mingling, and obviously the guest list was pretty exclusive.
There will be music (sure, dance if you wish), food and beverage (however, if you have any real-life special food needs, you will need to bring your own).

In the world of Neverdale, it is important to note that the actual world itself is not called Neverdale (that's just the name of the game). Neverdale is the name of the island fortress towers where the best mages in the world study and practice their craft. It is also the home of Aelinar, the Grand Advisor, who heads the Grand Council that decides all of the important events, treaties and such of the world. Whoever holds this position wields great power and influence over the leaders of the world.

This hosting of the Winter's Eve Festival is being held at Neverdale, itself, due to Aelinar seeking a replacement and Emperor Malphaet's personal request that this be the place his daughter chooses her suitor(s).
Why he chose not to host it in his own lands could be a topic of interest.

The festival/gala/event/party of Winter's Eve has always been one steeped in tradition. Generally, it is the last time to get out, visit, socialize and generally make merry before the cold, cruel winter comes in and seals everything (some say the very hearts and souls of everyone in the world) for the months ahead. Prior to the Winter's Eve celebrations everyone has gathered all of the supplies they need to survive the harsh embrace of ice and bitter frost. Now is the night to join with others and say farewell to summer's colder cousin, autumn. This night is about enjoying oneself and remembering all of the faces that you will not see for many months. As such, it is rare that Winter's Eve is ever celebrated in one's home. It is a time to be with those you will not be able to visit during the chill. Most take this opportunity to release themselves and make merry, as there is always the very real possibility that we may not survive this next winter. There are other for whom Winter's Eve is a solemn, magical, sacred occasion (mages, diviners and such fall into this category) and rarely do they see the benefit of all this merriment. There are rituals and prayers and omens to look after on this night. It is a good bet that Aelinar chose this night carefully for the decision he is about to make. As true that Lord Malphaet chose this night especially for his daughter's first public appearance and the choosing of her suitor(s). If she chooses someone, they will be apart for all of winter and probably wed in the spring. A natural, traditional course of events for a Winter's Eve betrothal.

***For a look at the map of Ye Known World for Neverdale, go to the photo section my album "Props, sets, etc."

More later.

Here you go:
Now that we've gotten a good amount of RSVPs, the main characters are now taken (if you have questions about costuming/makeup, feel free to ask, especially for those non-human folk):

Bahgir (Purplehairedfreak)
Deven (demihappycow)
Aeryn (Ender)
Lady Finstasia (Di)
Lady Delanora (Nyah)
Kelwen (Warr)
Dorian (Wyqued)
Mel (RevNecifer)
Lillandria (Maboroshi)
Gamblioni (docjudas)
Aelinar (Flymolo)
Der'on (may not be played, or will be played by Ethan, not yet a SHAGLARP member)
Julian (Alvy)

These people are definitely playing extras (yay! you guys rock!):
(wolfen guard) Kent
(human server/messenger) Tromo
(elfkin server/messenger) Boomslang
(orpheon apprentice-assistant to Aelinar) Leshrac
(human server/messenger) Silverblade18
(changeling server/messenger) Kaxii
(human guard) Kunzite1
(human handmaid) DragonflyDreamer
(human steward) Muffin
(changeling server/messenger) Stephanie (not a SHAGLARP member, yet)
(n'henoth assistant to Lillandria) Gravityspyral

Also, anyone RSVPing after this point will be playing an extra. And thank you so much for doing so. The extras (servers, guards, etc.) really make the mood in a setting of this sort. Thank you!

As the Portland Hobby Fair will not be in operation the day of our event, we will be having players arrive at around 5pm, so that they can pick through costumes, make-up and such. Please arrive as close to 5pm as you can, so we can be ready to start the game by 6pm.
You can arrive a little earlier if you wish, but not too much earlier, as we will be setting up the place and I'd rather not have you see the "stage" before it's "set".

Just a quick note that everyone will be getting emails (as long as I have your email address) or PMs with your character information in them sometime during the week of Christmas (some may receive them earlier). This will be all of the personality, motivation, goals, etc.
The actual character sheets (and cards with powers, spells, etc.) will be handed out at game (your character packet).

Just a quick bit of extra description for those of you playing mages, diviners or any of the non-humans. I know many of you would like to go the extra mile with costuming and makeup and such, but don't necessarily know what the characters should look like (because I realize I only included the super brief description of the races).

Mages and Diviners:
All of these folk tend to have facial markings of some sort (in game they are usually self done tattoos), sometimes including embedded gems.
This can all be done with eyeliner pencils (although some folk have actually used permanent markers!) and such. There are lots of cool craft gems with a flat surface for gluing to items that can be used with spirit gum to affix to your face (I used to do that, both for elves in the BTL game and some demon creatures in the Crucible game).
These folk also never wear armor of any sort, but often wear several layers, robes, capes, cloaks, etc. (granted, some female mages like to "distract" by not wearing so many layers. LOL). Rarely wear gloves. Often wear jewelry, hats, headbands and such.
And, yes, I have and will be bringing lots of this sort of stuff to game, so don't worry if you don't have any (of course, if you check out the Costume forum, you might get some help, too).

Okay, now on to the races.

N'henoth:
These are the half demons and their appearance gives this away. Generally, no two n'henoth look alike. Every one of them has something (sometimes LOTS of somethings) that makes them OBVIOUSLY not human. Without covering themselves, it would be impossible for a n'henoth to pass as any other race. Some have horns, some have snouts, some have pointed ears, or black skin, or scales, or fur, or oddly colored eyes, or claws, or fangs, etc., etc.
When playing a n'henoth, have fun. Do whatever you're comfortable doing. They can be subtly weird or wildly bizarre, or anything in between.

Catkin:
Feline-human creatures. Usually look like a cross between one of the big cats (lions, tigers, panthers, etc.) and humans. They are sometimes thin and graceful, sometimes large and imposing. Yes, I hate to say it, but think "Thundercats", except in a medieval-fantasy setting. Yes, they have cat eyes, yes they have fur, yes they have cat ears, yes they have sharp teeth and tails. No, they don't use a litter box.
When playing a catkin, you can go all out (contacts, prosthetic muzzle, ears tips, claws, etc.) or just do a little to make sure people remember that you look like a cat-person (tail, costume cat ears, maybe tiger striped makeup, etc.).

Oxkin:
Simply put, these are minotaurs. Yep, big, bull headed, with large horns. Sure, when playing an oxkin you could wear a prosthetic bovine muzzle and hoof boots of some sort and giant horns (ala Legend) or you could just dress fairly bulky and wear long horns. Stomp around a bit, as though you had massive hooves. Many oxkin have facial tattoos, as well.

Elfkin:
Basically, a half elf. Most elfkin have the pointy elf ears and slightly inhuman features. Some actually look pretty much human. When playing an elfkin, decide how elven you want to look and go with it (unless of course your character write-up says specifically what they should look like. LOL)

J'par:
Yep, big ogre/troll/klingon creatures. They have horns (some short, some long, some ram like), tusks and dark skin, ranging from dark orange-tan to gray-blue. Often, they have thick, ugly scars. They also wear impressive facial tattoos, usually of a simple, strong appearance.

Changeling:
Half human, half fey (because the faerie folk cannot live in the Cold World), these folk are usually something special to see. Often their hair color and eye color is anything but "normal". Their skin ranges in color, but often has a shine, shimmer or even a glitter to it. Their eyes are captivating, so make sure to make up the eyes to really stand out.

Orpheon:
Unearthly and odd, these elves often have a green or blue tint to their skin and unnatural colors in their hair and eyes. They range from perfectly groomed to wild and chaotic looking, though they always present themselves in calm fashion, as though whatever is happening here is not truly as important as what is happening in their mind. They are not spacey, but rather contemplative (i.e. wise monk, not stoner philosopher).

U'shitha:
The perfect elven form. Proud, perfect of posture, always well groomed and deserving of attention. Pointy ears, yes. Silly bright green Robin Hood outfits: almost NEVER! Yes, you should try to subtly bring out the eyes when playing one of the u'shitha.

I've been sending out some of the character write ups today (Merry Xmas?). Some have gone to PMs and some have been sent via email. If your email wasn't listed publicly on SHAGLARP (or you aren't a close personal friend whose email I know), you'll be getting info via PM. If you would like me to have your email address for character info, etc., go ahead and PM me with that info.
(**1-1-09** So far, only PurpleHairedFreak, Tromo and DhahranDamehave not read their PMs... I don't know who all got their emails, hopefully everyone. LOL)

Okay, now back to the sending (and editing and such)!
Smile

Here for your amusement and extra color and spice for the Neverdale game are the rules for the dice game, Goblin. This is a game played by commoner and noble alike (though for different wagers, no doubt).
I made this game up back when I was playing BTL, years ago. It is much easier to teach and learn in person (as it is a really simple game) than it is in writing, but here's my best effort:

Goblin
The simple wagering dice game

Components (all dice are six sided):
1 goblin die
4 skull dice
1 normal die (no skulls or goblin)
1 or 2 more normal dice per player (or at least six tokens per player)

Goal: Get all of your opponents down to zero points before you get to zero. All opponents give you one coin (drink, hour of service, whatever the wager was) per pip left on your die (or per token left, etc.).

Play:
Each player rolls the goblin die, the four skull dice and the one normal die (all together) three times on their turn with some exceptions (see below).
You are trying to get the goblin and as many skulls as possible to show. If the goblin is showing, then your opponent loses one point per skull showing (with one exception, see below).

The turn:
If, on your first roll, no goblin, no skulls and no 1 on the normal die are showing, then your turn is over. In the hardcore game, you also lose one point (color text is that the goblins are so angered at your feeble attempt that they attack you).
If you roll anything (goblin, skull or 1 on normal die), you put those aside and re-roll the rest of the dice, repeating the process until you have rolled a total of three times. After the third roll, add up everything you got. If you rolled any skulls and a 1 on the normal die, then put one skull and the normal die aside, as the 1 cancels out one skull (obviously if you wind up with the goblin, one skull and the 1 showing, you do no damage). If all you rolled was the 1 on the normal die and no skulls or goblin, then your opponent gains one point (color text is that the goblins healed him in anger of your failure). If you have the goblin showing, add up the skulls showing. Your opponent takes that many points of damage (if you have a goblin and no skulls, then no damage). You may put two skulls aside at any time you have them (first, second or third roll) and turn over the goblin die so that it is showing (“burn two skulls to bring out the goblin”). These skulls no longer count towards damage, though, so if you have only two skulls, you will not do any damage by doing this. If you have three skulls and you burn two to get the goblin, you will do one point to your opponent. If you have four skulls and have to burn two to get the goblin, then you will do two points to your opponent. Yes, you may wait until after the third roll to decide whether or not to burn any skulls.

If your first roll is:

~No goblin, no skulls, no 1 on the normal die = your turn is over (optionally, lose one point)

If, after your third roll (and any burning of skulls to bring out the goblin), you have:

~No goblin, no skulls, 1 on the normal die = your opponent gains one point

~Goblin, but no skulls = nothing, turn is over

~Goblin, one skull and 1 on normal die = nothing, turn is over

~Goblin, two skulls and 1 on normal die = opponent loses one point

~Goblin, three skulls and 1 on normal die = opponent loses two points

~Goblin, four skulls and 1 on normal die = opponent loses three points

~Goblin, skulls and no 1 on normal die = opponent loses amount of points equal to number of skulls

And, yes, I shall be supplying at least one set of goblin dice for the Neverdale game.

Yes, this time I plan to get lots of pictures of this game. It will be easier, since I will be OOC for most of the game (or maybe all of it) and so free to roam and obnoxiously flash people with my camera.
I also want to actually get some good, posed shots. For those showing up without costume/makeup, I would love to get some before/after pics.

Also, regarding Afters, I believe we will be hitting up the Denny's by Clackamas Town center again, so be thinking about transport and such.
Yes, there will be some food at the game, but it will mostly be small stuff that is standing in for or representing the cool, fancy rich food that we couldn't possibly put on the tables. LOL. So far, the feast will be mostly breads/pastries and beverages (i.e. things that don't go bad after being out and unrefrigerated for hours).

Just a thought,
Do you still have the Goblin for Goblin toss?

Yes, but he's so worse for wear and time. I've been trying to keep him alive by repairing him with liquid latex, but it throws of his balance and he doesn't throw correctly anymore. *sigh*

Just a quick FYI for all of the players for Neverdale today.
I shall be all but unavailable from about 1:30pm on, as I will be heading over to the site to get things ready.
I'll be checking email and PMs here off and on until I leave, and maybe at the site, if there's some wifi I can snag.
So, if you desperately need to reach me for questions, please get them to me before 1pm (that last half an hour before I leave may be hectic).
See you all around 5pm ( a little earlier is okay, too... see post in forum).
