This is a story about Alice.
Once upon a time there was a young girl named Alice, who was left alone one dreary afternoon by her parents. Being young and bored she started looking at the rows of books on her parent’s bookcase. She found the book that was right for her; after all, her name was in the title: The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
She flipped the book open and found a little poem about the Borogroves and how the Mome Raths were Outgrabe. She read the warning about a creature that had jaws that bite and claws that catch, and when it came out of the Tulgey wood Alice was frightened. In her fright something happened, the kind of thing that happens only in books. The Jabberwocky came to life; Alice screamed and ran into the living room, trapping it outside. Being a scared young girl Alice started grabbing more books and looking for someone who could help her. Is this real or merely all in the head of a little girl? With this question in mind the real story begins.
Characters:
In the game of Side Quest you all play literary characters that are ripped into life from the pages of the book, I am allowing you to choose your character but there are a few rules about what you can play:
1. No Religious Text.
2. No Comic Books.
3. You must be able to bring the book to game.
4. All characters must be approved by GM.
In choosing your character I need you to send me the following information either by PM or a reply to this post:
Player name: Either your real name or your Shag name just something I can shout at you when I need you.
Character name: Pretty straight forward, I need to know who you are planning on playing.
Title, Author and Page #: I need the title of the book you are from, the author, and also the page number in particular that you are being pulled from. This last part is very important as it helps to determine what equipment and costuming you need, how you react and what you were doing before you were interrupted.
Short description of character: I might not know who you are playing so I need a brief description of who you are playing. What are they like? Their goals, personality and other vital character information will help greatly. Remember, your personality and goals depend heavily on the page in question so be aware of the situation your character is coming from.
A note on context: Though you are being read to life, you are being read into life from the perspective of a panicked child. She might not understand the nuances and subtleties of who you are. Kids tend to be rather black & white with their logic. So don’t be surprised if you end up coming out a bit “different” than the story itself. This would be especially true of rather powerful types of characters as well as characters who are “morally grey”. If you specifically want your character to be affected this way, let the GM know.
I also need to have your character information sent to me no later than 3 weeks before the game date. That gives me time to go over the information and make the proper adjustments, as well as give you your character info before the game!
Costume: This should be a very costume heavy game. If you are having trouble with your costume, props, or ideas let us know. SHAGLARP is full of people that would love to help… that is what we are here for.
NPC: I will need 1 female NPC to play a big part. I also need 1 NPC to play a very small part and not be in game much. It is OK if no one volunteers for the small part, I have a extra I can call on if needed.
(***These parts are taken***)
System
Everyone will be given a number of points in 4 categories.
Strength: This measures brute force, physical abilities and feats of the body.
Intelligence: This state reflects book learning, wisdom, puzzle solving and other mental acuities.
Magic/Tech: This is the state that represents your abilities for spells, special fighting techniques, skills and other qualities that are iconic to your character. Like Merlin’s ability to cast spells, Robin Hood’s archery talents, or even Dr. Moreau’s scientific genius.
MCS: Main Character Syndrome is the essence that makes you what you are. You are the protagonist (or antagonist) of a literary work. You’re a star, and MCS is what fuels you to the epic heights you can achieve. In this world you still can do some great things, but at a price. You can use MCS in a few different ways:
1.You use an MCS in order to use any powers, fighting techniques or other feats that are iconic to your character (Like Jack using his axe with the force to take down a beanstalk etc.)
2.You can use MCS to gain an additional point in a stat of your choice for the use of a challenge.
3.You can use MCS to get a re-test on a challenge.
4.Once you are out of MCS there is no way to gain any back. The GM will be awarding point for good roleplaying. The GM can also take away points for abusing the system.
Most things you try to do will just work. If you try to do something against someone else you will compare traits. If you have 2 or more traits then your opponent, you win. If you have a single traits difference or tied traits you do a challenge. You don’t have to compare the same traits, for Example:
Frankenstein wants to throw a punch at Dracula; he is going to use Strength as his trait (5). Dracula is going to try and predict where the punch is going and try to dodge it, which uses Intelligence traits (5). The traits are = so they do a simple challenge.
If Frankenstein had 7 in strength then he would have won without the need of a challenge. Dracula could have used an MCS point to up his intelligence stat to make a challenge happen. _________________ <strong>Ender</strong><br><em>"What do you mean the goblins are suppose to lose"</em> -Goblin Squad (BTL)

Hmm... I have several ideas, already. I'll definitely be PM-ing them to you, so as to not alert the other players... yes. This should be way, way fun...

So, the guidelines are:

I am hoping people take characters from fictional books, even though that isn't listed as criteria, as that would be so much more fun.
As listed, you could still take characters from resource/reference books, history books, etc. It seems, from the cool flavor of the game, that would not be the intention.
So, I thought I should ask and clarify for everyone: can you use characters from resource/reference, history or other non-fiction books? _________________ "Everyone's here to have fun. Yes you can! Of course there is magical rule #4.
But if you pick Abraham Lincon from a encyclopedia
1. He is going to have a tech shock
2. Your special power is going to be what a little girl thinks it should be and
3. Your costume better be great.
To the mind of a little girl (and some adults) non-fictional characters from books (even reference books) still seem like fictional people. The first time I read about Benjamin Franklin I did not picture him as a real person. He was a character in a story who did some cool things. _________________ <strong>Ender</strong><br><em>"What do you mean the goblins are suppose to lose"</em> -Goblin Squad (BTL)

Awesome! Actually with that twist (through the eyes of a little girl), that makes all sorts of basic people sound pretty cool. I may even have to re-think my first idea.
Hmmm... there's a lot of room for creativity and fun with some of the most "normal" characters.
Of course, there's also characters like Zues or Thor or Cthulhu or Asmodeus in some of those reference books.
Thank goodness that little Alice isn't actually at The Frat when this happens. I'd shudder to think of what "things" would be summoned to try to help her. LOL. Demons, archangels, gods, heroes, monsters... *shudder* _________________ "Everyone's here to have fun. If you're being an a**hole, then someone's not going to have fun. So, don't be an a**hole." If you are having a problem picking, because of all your choices, Here is a couple recommendations.
1. Take your top 5 choices and start thinking of costuming. The ones that will be impossible to dress as take out of the list.
2. Talk to friends that are not part of SHAGLARP. Most people you ask "if you could play any character from a book who would it be and why?" They will have some good answers. If they ask why... invite them to game!
3. Talk to other players, see what they are playing. There is nothing saying you cannot team up and play characters from the same book, or the same character from the same book at a different point. _________________ <strong>Ender</strong><br><em>"What do you mean the goblins are suppose to lose"</em> -Goblin Squad (BTL)

So I am assuming we are wanting relatively well known characters? People who are distinctive in history..pop culture..or well known fictional folks?
It would be nice and make my job easer, but it is not a rule. If there is a secondary character from a book that you really want to play it should not be to big of a problem. I figured people would like to have lots of options. _________________ <strong>Ender</strong><br><em>"What do you mean the goblins are suppose to lose"</em> -Goblin Squad (BTL)
